19-Year-Old Cathedral City Man Fatally Injured in Accident near Palm Drive
PALM SPRINGS, CA (April 16, 2018) – A multiple-vehicle collision involving an Acura, a Suzuki Motorcycle, a big rig, and a pickup truck, took the life of 19-Year-Old Raymond Vasquez of Cathedral City, early Monday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 5 AM on Interstate 10 Freeway west of Palm Drive. A 2002 Acura CL, driven by Vasquez, collided with a Suzuki motorcycle ridden by 34-year-old Yucca Valley resident Aaron Coates.
The impact sent the Acura into the center divider guardrail, and Coates was ejected from his bike.
After coming to a rest at the guardrail, the Acura was struck by a 2013 Freightliner Big Rig and a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Vasquez, two passengers sitting in the Acura, and Coates sustained serious injuries and were sent to the Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment and evaluation. The driver of the pickup received minor injuries but was not hospitalized.
Doctors attempted life-saving measures, but Vasquez succumbed to his injuries several hours later and was pronounced dead. A GoFundMe page was started to assist the Vasquez family with their expenses.
Investigators shut down all eastbound lanes for the Interstate 10 Freeway for around 40 minutes and two more lanes for another hour.
