Passenger Ramiro Benitez Killed in Newport Beach Car Accident

Newport Beach, CA (September 21, 2020) – On Sunday, 42-year-old Ramiro Benitez of Newport Beach, died, while police arrested a driver for the crash in the 3000 block of Pacific Coast Highway.

Capt. Tim Martin of the Huntington Beach Police Department said the incident began at 5:35 AM. An HBPD officer attempted to make a traffic stop a black Honda Accord with two men inside in the area of Goldenwest Street and Ellis Avenue.

The police started chasing the vehicle after its driver failed to yield to the lights and siren of the patrol vehicle.

The Honda moved southbound on Goldenwest Street to the eastbound Pacific Coast Highway at legal speeds, but sped up after passing downtown area. It reached a speed of over 100 miles an hour.

Moreover, the pursuit continued toward Brookhurst Street. It was later canceled due to the “reckless and dangerous speed of the suspect vehicle.”

A few minutes later, the Newport Beach Police Department found out that the suspect vehicle was involved in a single-vehicle crash in the area of the Old Newport Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway.

The driver sought to flee but police was able to arrest him. The passenger, identified by the Orange County Coroner as Ramiro Benitez, died at the scene.

Meanwhile, the police rushed the driver to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Authorities withheld his name and pending charges due to his medical condition.

Please call the HBPD Detective Bureau at (714) 536-5951 if you have further details about the crash.
