Rafael Celaya Killed in South 6th Avenue Crash [Tucson, AZ]

Tucson, AZ (August 09, 2021) – On Saturday, 70-year-old Rafael Celaya lost his life in a deadly vehicle crash on South 6th Avenue.

Officers responded to the accident scene at about 3 p.m., at the intersection with East Michigan Drive.

When the authorities arrived, they found Tucson Fire medics on scene rendering aid to the 2005 white Volvo S60 driver.

However, Celaya succumbed to his injuries minutes later.

Investigating officers said Celaya was westbound on Michigan Drive when he failed to stop at the stop sign on 6th Avenue. He continued driving westbound across northbound lanes and struck a northbound 2014 blue Ford F150 pickup.

Officers say the Ford pickup driver was not impaired during the fatal accident.

Moreover, the authorities said roadway evidence and interviews show that failing to stop at the stop sign by Celaya is the major contributing factor in this incident.

Officers did not charge or arrest anyone in the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing.
