40-Year-Old Moreno Valley Killed and 3 Others Injured in Rollover Crash near Rice Road
DESERT CENTER, CA (July 15, 2018) – One person was killed and three others were injured in a solo-car crash on Interstate 10, late Sunday morning. The deceased victim was later identified as 40-year-old Rachel Lopez of Moreno Valley.
Tawny Cabral of Riverside Fire Department stated that the accident took place on the eastbound I-10 near Rice Road, around 11:00 AM. Lopez was driving a 2003 Toyota Prius when the vehicle went off the left side of the highway and overturned in an open dirt center median.
The events leading up to the collision and what caused the car to flip over is unclear at this time.
Lopez sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio, where she was pronounced dead around two hours later. Three others in the Prius – a 48-year-old man, a 15-year-old boy, and an 8-year-old boy – suffered minor injuries in the collision.
The area of the collision was shut down for about one and a half, as the helicopter landed on the freeway to take Lopez to treatment. Officials with the Riverside Sheriff’s Department continue to investigate the fatal incident, but drugs and alcohol do not seem to be contributing factors. According to reports, all four occupants in the Prius were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
