Suspected Armed Driver Collides into Woodland Hills Bank in Crash near Ventura Boulevard
LOS ANGELES, CA (July 10, 2019) – A suspected armed driver led the police to a chase that ended in a crash at Ventura Boulevard and Serrania Avenue Tuesday after midnight.
The Los Angeles police said a sergeant tried to stop a BMW SUV on Ventura Boulevard in Van Nuys for a traffic violation. However, instead of pulling over, the driver took out what looked like a gun.
The police started chasing the suspect who continued driving. After that, he went through the 101 Freeway and the 134 Freeway and then exited Van Nuys Boulevard.
A witness said that the driver made doughnut maneuvers while three or four police patrol vehicles pursued him. After that, there were dozens of police cars that trailed the speeding driver. A cellphone video showed that a patrol vehicle crashed into the SUV at a large intersection.
Officers said the suspect pointed what looked to be a firearm at officers multiple times during the pursuit. However, it was unclear whether it was a real gun.
The police chase continued for about an hour before the police deployed a spike strip. As a result, that caused the BMW to crash into a Chase bank near the intersection of Ventura Boulevard and Serrania Avenue in Woodland Hills.
After that, the suspect refused to exit his vehicle. As a result, the standoff lasted for about four hours. In addition, the suspect even threatened an explosion with a gas canister as per the LAPD.
Crisis negotiators were able to persuade the driver to surrender with the help of his family members. As a result, after an almost a four-hour standoff, the suspect exited his vehicle.
An ambulance took the suspect to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. However, the LAPD said nobody else was hurt in the incident.
Crews towed the SUV from the scene in Woodland Hills at about 8:00 a.m. However, the police did not release the suspect’s name. Further investigation is underway.
Traffic stops are an important part of a law enforcement officer’s duty to serve and protect the community. However, it can be a stressful situation for both the driver and the officer. Find the nearest and safest area to pull over and park your car. In addition, stay in the vehicle until the officer gives you further instructions.
