2 Pronounced Dead after Auto Accident near Hawthorn Street in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA (March 19, 2020) – Early Wednesday morning, 33-year-old Porsha Standard and 58-year-old Mark Luther were killed in a collision on the 5 Freeway.
Authorities received reports of the wrong-way crash around 1:15 a.m., on March 11. Dispatchers arrived to the area near Hawthorn Street shortly after.
A southbound black sedan was in the northbound lanes when it collided head-on with another car. Neither vehicles had occupants other than the drivers.
When the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office arrived, they located both drivers unresponsive. Authorities later declared both victims dead at the scene.
At this time, it is still unknown which vehicle went the wrong way. However, the California Highway Patrol clarified that drugs and alcohol did not play a role. The collision remains under active investigation.
Meanwhile, authorities shut down the northbound lanes on 5 Freeway between Highway 163 and Hawthorn Street for almost six hours while crews investigated the scene. By 6:40 a.m., the roads reopened.
