Pilot Killed in Fiery Cessna Plane Crash on North Sutter Avenue

Pacoima, CA (November 12, 2020) – On Thursday, a pilot died in a fiery Cessna small plane crash on North Sutter Avenue.

The crash took place at about 11:50 a.m. in the 10600 block area.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane was about to approach Runway 12 at Whiteman Airport.

In audio from the control tower, the pilot calmly mentioned he was having engine problems minutes before the plane crashed feet away from a home.

Further, the Los Angeles Fire Department said the crash brought down a number of electrical wires. It also caught several vehicles on fire and damaged at least one home.

Luckily, nobody on the ground sustained injuries. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading.

The Pain of Untimely and Wrongful Death

Jasmine Hernandez was driving toward that same street when her car battery died seconds before the plane crash. She considered it an act of God.

“I saw a whole bunch of kids running, screaming and they didn’t know what to do,” she said.

Moreover, the aviation records confirmed Civil Air Patrol owns the plane. It is a volunteer organization that helps with emergency services, which includes search and rescue and disaster relief operations.

Also, on Thursday evening, the Civil Air Patrol confirmed the pilot was one of their own and was on a flight from Bakersfield.

The authorities did not release his name at the request of the family.

City Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez called for the airport to be shut down. She issued a statement on Saturday night.

“Today’s accident is a reminder of the public safety threat that Whiteman Airport has long posed to the community of Pacoima; a community that derives no value from [its] operation, but is subject to all the negative impacts,” she said. “As the County evaluates efforts to invest resources with greater equity, I’m calling for the closure and redevelopment of the Whiteman Airport to bring much-needed housing, jobs, and economic opportunities to the region.”

Meanwhile, the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were conducting an investigation to identify the cause of the crash.
