DUI Driver Causes Five-Vehicle Collision near E Street Bridge
MARYSVILLE, CA (June 21, 2018) – On Thursday evening, a wrong-way driver under the influence of drugs and alcohol caused a five-vehicle crash on State Route 70.
Just before 7:00 PM, 40-year-old Phoutherro Yok was driving north on Highway 70 in a 2016 Toyota Camry, when he made a U-turn near the E Street Bridge. As he was driving the wrong way, going southbound in the northbound lanes, Yok came into contact with four other vehicles.
A 1998 Saturn attempted to avoid the collision but crashed with the center guardrail. Yok continued south, crashing head-on with a 2016 Nissan Rogue, that flipped and landed on its side. Yok still kept driving south and came into contact with a 1997 Toyota Camry. The Camry swerved to avoid a crash, but was sideswiped on the passenger side, causing Yok’s vehicle to finally come to a stop. The fifth and last car involved was hit by flying debris from the previous accidents in the area.
The wrong-way driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and evaluation. No other injuries were reported in the multiple incidents. Investigators found that Yok was under the influence of both drugs and alcohol, and he is facing charges of felony DUI and wrong way driving.
Authorities are still investigating the crash and looking to determine if this had anything to do with a series of hit-and-run calls in Marysville, just prior to the multi-vehicle crash. Anyone with more information about this incident is urged to call (530) 674-5141.
