Philip Shama Recovers After Bicycle Accident on FM 2920 in Harris County

Harris County, TX (January 3, 2025) – The new year marks a true fresh start for Houston business-owner Philip Shama, who narrowly survived being struck by a driver last fall. 

The collision occurred at the intersection of FM 2920 and the Grand Parkway in Northwest Harris County, just before sunrise. Shama had chosen that early time for his ride to fit it into his busy schedule. 

Despite using advanced lights and technology to ensure visibility, a driver running a red light turned his routine ride into a life-altering event.

Remarkably, Shama has returned to his business in the Washington corridor that bears his name, surrounded by family, friends, and customers. “I definitely don’t remember the accident, or anything from the next five days,” he shares.

Shama endured catastrophic injuries, including fractures in every rib on his left side, a broken leg, a shattered collarbone, and severe internal injuries that required multiple surgeries. 

These injuries left him in the Medical Center ICU for over a month. “The doctors, I guess, weren’t sure on the first day if I was going to make it,” he recalls. “For me, I woke up thinking, I’m fine. What’s wrong with me?”

He points to ambivalence and distraction as primary causes of these accidents. “If you’re looking through the windshield and paying attention, you should be able to see and avoid hitting someone in front of you,” he states.

In the aftermath of the crash, Shama’s friends and the cycling community rallied, offering financial and emotional support to him, his wife, and their toddler twins. 

Although his future bike rides will be more cautious, Shama feels deeply connected to his community. “Seeing the support from friends, customers, and the cycling community was humbling and overwhelming,” he says. “It made me think, ‘I can’t give up, I can’t stop,’ because all these people believe in me.”

The driver who hit Shama remained at the scene but faced no charges, claiming he had the light. 

Witnesses later confirmed the driver’s error, and a civil case is nearing settlement to cover Shama’s financial losses. 

While he continues working to recover emotionally, his resilience and community support keep him moving forward.
