Investigating officers said a 52-year-old man was driving a Peterbilt, towing a low-boy trailer westbound on the #2 lane of the freeway. The Peterbilt was slowing for traffic approaching a semi-truck on fire.

At the same time, a Ford Econoline driven by a 68-year-old man was behind the Peterbilt. The Ford driver did not slow for the Peterbilt and was unable to avoid rear-ending it.

The Ford turned onto its side and slid into a Kern County Fire truck that was parked on the right shoulder.
