Amtrak Train Fatally Hits Pedestrian in Chico

 
CHICO, CA (May 20, 2019) – A pedestrian died in a train accident near West Sacramento Avenue in Chico Saturday morning. The Butte County Sheriff’s Department said an Amtrak train struck the still unidentified pedestrian just before 5 a.m. Officials turned over the body of the victim to the coroner’s office.
 
Based on an email statement from Amtrak, the incident occurred on the tracks north of West Sacramento Avenue at milepost 184.97. It involved an Amtrak Coast Starlight train 11 traveling from Seattle to L.A. Amtrak said the train came 70 minutes late than usual. However, a passenger on the train said the train was 90 minutes late due to a crew change and arrived at around 8 a.m.
 
219 passengers and crew members were aboard the train when the accident happened. None of them were hurt.
 
As a result, Amtrak emphasizes to the public to “exercise extreme caution around railroad tracks and crossings.” Moreover, it stated that there are about 2,000 people killed or injured each year in grade crossing and trespassing incidents nationwide.
