Male Pedestrian Dead After Crash on Highway 99 in Merced County

Merced County, CA (February 6, 2026) – A male pedestrian died in a crash on Highway 99.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on a highway on-ramp in Merced County.

Around 8:14 p.m., officers arrived at the scene of the collision on the northbound Highway 99 on-ramp from Highway 140 in the City of Merced, according to Merced CHP Officer Eric Zuniga.

Authorities reported that a 52-year-old Merced woman driving a 2006 Ford Expedition attempted to merge onto northbound Highway 99 when her vehicle struck an adult male pedestrian.

Officer Zuniga stated the driver was traveling at an unknown speed and likely did not see the pedestrian, who was wearing dark clothing and walking eastward across the ramp at the time of the incident. 

Tragically, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities noted that poor lighting may have contributed to the accident. “There’s some street lighting, but it’s not very well lit,” Zuniga said.

The driver, who showed no signs of intoxication, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
