Police Investigate Crash on East California Avenue in Bakersfield

Bakersfield, CA (May 10, 2025) – Two vehicles struck and killed a pedestrian Friday night crash on East California Avenue.

Officers responded to a collision involving a pedestrian around 8:53 p.m. on May 9, 2025, in the 700 block of East California Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found an adult male pedestrian suffering from major injuries in the roadway. 

Emergency medical personnel transported him to a nearby hospital, where doctors later pronounced him deceased.

According to a preliminary investigation, the man was crossing East California Avenue outside of a crosswalk when a vehicle traveling eastbound struck him. 

Moments later, a second eastbound vehicle also hit the pedestrian. Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

Investigators determined that the driver involved in the initial impact was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. 

Police arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI. Authorities added that speed does not appear to have been a contributing factor.

This incident remains under investigation. The Kern County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the victim once next of kin have been notified.
