Ferguson, Mo (December 6, 2024) –A hit-and-run crash on West Florissant Avenue claimed the life of a 30-year-old man Thursday night just after 7:30 p.m., according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP).

Troopers reported that the collision occurred at West Florissant and Canfield Avenues. A Jeep Grand Cherokee, heading north on West Florissant, attempted to pass another vehicle and struck a pedestrian crossing the roadway. 

Authorities noted that the man was not using a crosswalk and was in the traffic lanes when the incident occurred.

The driver of the Jeep continued north without stopping after hitting the pedestrian. The injured man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Local residents expressed their concerns about traffic conditions on West Florissant. Jaier Scott, who frequently drives in the area, shared her worries about safety. “It’s always a concern when I’m in the car,” Scott said. “I’m always nervous somebody is going to hit us.” She added that reckless driving, including speeding and running red lights, is common in the area.

Jerry Montaque, another driver familiar with the road, echoed these sentiments. “Driving on W. Florissant is very dangerous,” Montaque said. “No one knows the speed limit. They just drive reckless. Accidents happen every day or every other day here.”

As the investigation continues, troopers are actively searching for the driver and vehicle involved in the fatal hit-and-run. 

Local residents are urging drivers to prioritize safety, particularly during the holiday season.

“I’d like to see fewer accidents around the holiday season,” Scott added. “It’s sad, and I always pray for people when I drive by.”

The Missouri State Highway Patrol encourages anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
