Pedestrian Fatally Struck by SMART Train near Golf Course Drive [Rohnert Park, CA]

SMART Train Struck and Killed Woman in Rohnert Park

 
ROHNERT PARK, CA (June 28, 2019) — A SMART train (Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit train) struck and killed a pedestrian in Rohnert Park Thursday morning.
 
Deputy Chief Aaron Johnson said the collision occurred in the area of Golf Course Drive and Roberts Lake Road. In addition, the Department of Public Safety responded to the incident around 7:50 a.m. 
 
According to Johnson, the woman died at the scene. The responders found the victim against a fence about 50 yards from the collision site. In addition, she appeared to be in her 40s.
 
The woman ignored the crossing arms as per the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety. She was trying to run across the tracks when the train hit her.
 
The people on board the train did not see the collision. However, the engineer said the crossing arms were down and the train sounded its horn at the time of the incident.
 
Johnson said the woman had a conflict with SMART’s code enforcement officers during the past week. He added that they kept trying to get her to stay off the tracks, but she was aggressive and defiant.
 
According to SMART spokeswoman Jeanne Mariani-Belding, the operation of SMART bus shuttles continued after the collision. They serviced passengers between the downtown Santa Rosa and Cotati train stations.
