Patricio Cabrera Jr and James Willis Killed in Highway 1 Vehicle Collision [San Mateo, CA]

San Mateo, CA (June 1, 2023) – On Tuesday, Patricio Cabrera Jr., 29, of San Francisco, and James Willis, 66, of Davenport, were killed in a Highway 1 vehicle collision.

The 2-vehicle collision happened at about 6:39 p.m. near Bean Hollow State Beach.

Investigating officers said the Subaru driven by Willis was northbound on the freeway while the Tesla driven by Cabrera Jr was southbound.

CHP Officer Art Montiel said, “One of the vehicles crossed over the double yellow lines and sideswiped the other vehicle. Both drivers lost control,” 

Both of the vehicles careened down an embankment and landed in a lagoon.

California Highway Patrol said the Tesla was completely submerged underwater and the Subaru was partially submerged.

The authorities declared both Cabrera Jr and Willis deceased at the scene while Willis’ passenger, Astrid Willis, 62, also of Davenport, sustained major injuries. She was airlifted to Stanford Hospital.

The CHP said it’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the Highway 1 vehicle collision.
