Kevin McConnell and Gwendolyn Vanpelt Injured in Fatal Two-Car Collision near Milepost 34
WILLOW CREEK, CA (October 6, 2018) – A person was killed Saturday morning following a head-on crash on Highway 299. The identity of the deceased victim is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place shortly before 6:00 AM near milepost 34. A 1999 Ford F350 was heading east on the highway when it lost control, drifted into the westbound lane, and collided head-on with a 2016 Dodge Caravan.
The driver of the Dodge, identified as 47-year-old Kevin McConnell of Hoopa, and his passenger, 77-year-old Gwendolyn Vanpelt, suffered serious injuries. Both of them were transported to the St Joseph Hospital in Eureka, where their current medical conditions remain unknown. Unfortunately, a second passenger in the Dodge succumbed to fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Ford, identified as 63-year-old Mark Lindley of Eureka, and his passenger, 48-year-old Jason Lawrence of Bayside, did not sustain injuries in the crash. They remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash and to identify possible contributing factors. It was also noted that the roadway was wet at the time of the collision. Additional information will be released once it becomes available.
