Chris Smith Arrested after Accident on Cal Oak Road near Ophir and Baggett Marysville Roads

OROVILLE, CA (May 1, 2018) – Three people were sent to the hospital after a three-car collision on Feather River Boulevard, on Tuesday morning.

The incident started around 9:40 AM when a sheriff’s deputy saw a Volkswagen Jetta driving recklessly in the area of Ophir Road and Baggett Marysville Road. The deputy tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver, identified as 27-year-old Chris Smith, refused to stop.

The deputy chased Smith onto Feather River, where Smith was accused of continuing to drive recklessly at speeds of up to 90 mph.

When the chase reached the area of Feather River Blvd and Cal Oak Rd, approaching Oro Dam Blvd, a supervisor of the pursuing deputy advised the deputy to end the chase “in the interest of public safety.” As the deputy began slowing down, Smith allegedly ran a red light at Feather River and Oro Dam, and crashed into a sedan with two people inside. The crash caused Smith’s car to also hit a tow truck.

Both occupants of the sedan were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not immediately confirmed. The tow truck driver was not seriously injured in the incident.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Smith also has allegedly fled from California Highway Patrol officers three times since January. He is now facing charges including reckless driving, evading, and possession of burglary tools.
