MURRIETA, CA (March 26, 2019) – At least one person died following a fiery crash on 15 Freeway at 11:27 a.m on Thursday, March 21.

According to a CHP log, witnesses reported that they saw the driver of a 2013 Ford Explorer trying to pass a slower-moving big rig by entering the right shoulder at about 80 miles per hour. Witnesses said that the vehicle began to slightly veer to the right as it draws nearer to a concrete pillar for the 215 Freeway overpass and crashed with it.

The force of the collision caused major damage to the Ford Explorer’s front end causing the engine compartment to ignite and catch fire.

CHP and Murrieta Fire Department rushed to the scene, according to CHP Officer Mike Lassig. The Ford Explorer was fully engulfed in flames and was eventually put out by Murrieta Fire Department. The driver died at the scene.

CHP officers temporarily closed the No. 3 lane on 15 Freeway during the incident and the on-scene investigation.
