29-Year-Old Man Fatally Injured in Accident near Mar Monte Avenue

 
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA (May 22, 2018) –  Early Tuesday morning, a single-car crash on Highway 1 in unincorporated Santa Cruz County, took the life of one man and injured another.
 
An 18-year-old man from Santa Cruz lost control of his 2001 Chevrolet Suburban on the southbound state Highway 1, just north of Mar Monte Avenue. The accident took place around 2:50 AM, when the teenager’s car struck a guardrail and overturned down a steep embankment, for reasons not yet confirmed by authorities.
 
A 29-year-old male passenger was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, and was ejected from the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
 
The 18-year-old driver was wearing a seat belt and sustained injuries. He was rushed to the Watsonville Community Hospital for treatment and evaluation. There is no update on his current medical condition. Fatigue is considered to have been a factor in the crash. The passenger’s identity has not yet been released by the Santa Cruz County coroner’s office, pending notification of family.
