According to the United States Department of Transportation, there are approximately 300,000 merging accidents every year. In 2017, 485,866 accidents were reported solely in the state of California. It is therefore important to follow all the traffic laws to avoid these types of accidents.

Safety Driving Tips

  • Aim high in steering, i.e., don’t make your steering adjustments based on what is directly in front of you, but rather what is down the road. If the drive is winding to the right, look as far into the turn as possible. This will improve your safety and make your shifts smoother.
  • Scan the road 1/2 mile a full mile ahead to recognize potential hazards in time.
  • Be a proactive driver, rather than a reactive one. Driving defensively prepares you for emergency situations.
  • Use road signals to communicate with those you are driving alongside.
  • It is also recommended to use a ride share app if you can’t safely operate a vehicle to avoid this kind of accident.

What to do after an accident

    • Before anything else, seek medical attention if you have been hurt.
    • Get to a safe place to prevent further damage or injury.
    • Collect as much information as possible: insurance and contact information of people involved in the accident, pictures/videos of vehicles involved, documentation of fault, and whatever else that can be used for evidence.
    • File a police report or incident report by calling 911.
    • Hire an experienced personal injury attorney from Sweet Lawyers.
    • Hiring a Personal Attorney

The most valuable step you can take in response to a vehicle crash is hiring a personal injury attorney. Mark Sweet, a personal injury attorney at Sweet Lawyers, says that serious car accident cases may call for a separate investigation spearheaded by an experienced lawyer fighting on behalf of a party. Oftentimes, injuries are not reported until it is too late.
