Man in His 30s Fatally Injured in a Train Crash Near Highway 2 and Main Street
MONROE, WA (January 16, 2018) – A pedestrian was struck by a BNSF freight train that was headed for Spokane near Woods Creek Road, on Tuesday morning around 6 AM.
The conductor of the train told authorities that he saw a man lying in the tracks, and administered emergency brakes immediately. The man got up, but was unable to get away before the locomotive struck him. Gus Melonas, BNSF spokesman, reported that the accident took place on the main rail line, and near US Route 2 and South Lewis Street.
Police officers, BNSF, and Fire District 7 personnel searched for the victim’s body in the heavily wooded area near the crash. The Snohomish County Search and Rescue was also called to assist. Crews searched for about two hours, until they found the body in a log jam in Woods Creek, below the train trestle bridge. A dive team was called to retrieve the body. The victim was said to be a man in his 30s. No other information has been disclosed at this time.
During police investigation and searching for the body, the train stopped and blocked Main Street, just west of Highway 2, for almost four hours.
