Monica Gonzalez Guzman Fatally Struck on Aurora and Corkill Road [Desert Hot Springs, CA]

Desert Hot Springs, CA (December 10, 2021) – On Thursday, 9-year-old Monica Gonzalez Guzman died in an accident on Corkill and Aurora Road.

Her brother, Julio Guzman, also sustained injuries in the deadly crash.

It was before 4 p.m. when the crash took place at the intersection, 17-555 Corkill Road, in Desert Edge.

Officers said that a white Cadillac driver rear-ended the school bus and continued on around it. 

The vehicle also took down a speed limit sign and struck four students who walked home from a bus stop.

One of the victims, Monica Gonzalez Guzman, 9, died at the accident scene.

Two of the three children sustained seriously injuries, while the other suffered minor injuries. 

Moreover, the involved driver was also hospitalized. Later, police arrested him, Robert Hanson, on for vehicular manslaughter, gross negligence , as well as felony hit and run.

Currently, the Desert Hot Springs resident is being held at the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio. On Friday, he posted $75,000 bail.

Meanwhile, the officers said that prior to the accident, the victims were dropped off by a different school bus coming from Julius Corsini Elementary School, off of Hacienda.

The authorities are investigating this deadly crash, while Monica, “Ceci” Guzman’s aunt, Paola Guzman, stated she wishes for better safety measures in place for pedestrian students.

Apparently, where the fatal accident occurred, there is no sidewalk or barrier present, but only a dirt path next to the road.
