2 Firefighters Injured in Gaviota Auto Accident on Highway 101
GAVIOTA, CA (March 30, 2023) – Early Wednesday, a startling vehicle accident on Highway 101 Involved Modesto Zaragoza.
The initial incident happened at around 5:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Highway 101 near Highway 1 offramp.
25 minutes later, 46-year-old Modesta Zaragoza of Santa Maria driving a Nissan Quest approached the crash scene “at an unsafe speed for roadway conditions,” said CHP Officer Michael Griffith.
Then, Zaragoza lost control of the vehicle and went across the left-hand lane into a left-turn lane. Afterward, it veered to the right as it rotated clockwise.
Then, the minivan went onto the right highway shoulder, where CHP officers and fire personnel were standing.

Reports said that the minivan struck 2 firefighters, a captain, and an engineer from Station 31 in Buellton.
Afterward, the minivan went onto the dirt shoulder and overturned.
As a result, both firefighters sustained moderate to major injuries and were transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, by an AMR ambulance, and the other by a county Air Support Unit helicopter.
At this time, their identities remained undisclosed due to pending family notification.
Reports said that the fire captain was in serious but stable condition in an intensive care unit.
Meanwhile, the engineer was treated and released.
Zaragoza and three passengers in her vehicle suffered minor injuries.
Also, an ambulance took a patient with minor to moderate injuries to Cottage.
Then, four patients with minor injuries were taken to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria.
