One Dead and One Injured in Multiple Car Crash on Southbound 880 Freeway

MILPITAS, CA (January 9, 2018) – The California Highway Patrol reported a fatal wrong-way accident on the 880 Freeway involving 5 cars, around 4:49 AM.

CHP Officer, Ross Lee, said that a 52-year-old Oakland man was going the wrong way on the 880 freeway on Tuesday morning. He was driving in a 1992 Ford van traveling north in the southbound lanes, when a woman in a 2000 Buick going southbound noticed headlights coming towards her direction.

She veered left into the center divide to avoid colliding with the wrong-way driver. The van hit the back of the Buick on the passenger side, and continued driving, eventually crashing into a 2008 Honda truck head-on.

The Ford spun out into the lanes and was hit by a 2005 Mercedes-Benz. Traveling south on the highway, a 2014 Honda Civic then crashed into the Honda truck.

The wrong-way driver had critical injuries and was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The male driver of the Honda truck had minor injuries and complained of leg pain. He was also taken to a nearby hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities are not yet sure if alcohol or drugs were the reason for the accident.

Traffic was redirected, as three lanes of th southbound 880 were blocked for a few hours to tow the damaged cars and clean up the wreckage. The lanes reopened around 7:15 AM that same day.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victim. The professionals at Sweet Law Group wish them courage and strength.
