Michelle Weissman Dies in Las Vegas Bicycle Incident
Las Vegas, NV (October 29, 2020) – On Sunday, 56-year-old Michelle Weissman, of Las Vegas, died while riding her bicycle on Sahara Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard.
The fatal incident took place at about 7:25 A.M.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said they responded to the scene but turned the case over to homicide detectives.
Apparently, a passenger in a minivan was hanging out of a window. the passenger was identified as 20-year-old Giovanni Barajas, also of Las Vegas.
Barajas hit and killed Weissman while riding her bicycle, said Lt. Ray Spencer of LVMPD’s homicide section.
Then, Barajas accidentally fell out of the car, hit his head on a light post, and died.
Meanwhile, the van driver, Rodrigo Cruz, who turns 23 next week, drove away from the scene.
“Senseless is an understatement,” Spencer said during a briefing to media on Sunday. “You have a woman who was out riding her bicycle and they pull up next to her and strike her, causing her to die. It’s an absolutely senseless act.”
Further, the authorities later found and arrested Cruz at his home a few hours after the alleged attack.
He faces charges of open murder, failure to stop at the scene of an accident, and violating a condition of parole, jail and booking records indicate.
Cruz made his first court appearance Monday afternoon, where he was ordered detained without bail. He’s due to return to court on Oct. 28.
The officials ruled Weissman’s death a homicide, while Barajas’ death is ruled an accident.
