77-Year-Old Michael Burawoy Killed in Grand Avenue Hit-and-Run Crash [Oakland, CA]

Oakland, CA (February 5, 2025) – A 77-year-old UC Berkeley professor, Michael Burawoy, was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Grand Avenue Monday evening.

The fatal traffic collision happened around 7:10 p.m. at the intersection with Park View Terrace.

Police said Burawoy was walking inside a marked crosswalk when a westbound SUV on Grand Avenue struck him. They said the impact of the collision made him fly about 75 feet in the air before landing. 

The medical team treated him at the scene for injuries that included more than one skull fracture. He was then rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead past 8 p.m.

Michael Burawoy was a professor in the UC Berkeley sociology department and was a well-known British sociologist.

Meanwhile, the authorities do not have a description of the SUV or its driver. There is also no information on whether drugs or alcohol were factors.
