Pickup Truck Overturns on Highway 99 in Merced Killing its Passenger

MERCED, CA (March 14, 2019) – A man was killed following a rollover crash Thursday afternoon on northbound Highway 99 in Merced.

The fatal crash happened around 1:47 p.m. near East Childs Avenue exit.

A 1990 Toyota Tacoma, driven by a 67-year-old Peter Manston of Sacramento, was traveling northbound in the left lane of Highway 99 when for unknown reasons, it veered into the center median.

Manston told officers that he tried to get back on the roadway, but saw a vehicle in the right lane and tried to straighten the car. He lost control and hit the center median again, causing his pickup truck to overturn several times before it landed on its passenger side.

The passenger in the Tacoma, a 67-year-old Michigan man, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle.

Manston was taken by to Merced Medical Center with minor head injuries.

The left lane of Highway 99 was closed for several hours while CHP officials worked on the scene. The northbound traffic into Merced was backed up past the Mission Avenue exit.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but alcohol and drugs have not been ruled out as possible contributing factors.
