41-Year-Old Woman Fatally Injured in Fall Accident near Interstate 880
OAKLAND, CA (May 9, 2018) – On Wednesday evening, a woman involved in a traffic collision lost her life after climbing over a wall and falling off a freeway ramp at least 30 feet above the ground. She was identified as 41-year-old Melody Mendenhall of Alameda.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened around 8:45 PM. At least two vehicles were involved in a crash on the westbound Interstate 80 transition ramp to the southbound Interstate 880.
For unknown reasons, Mendenhall got out of her wrecked car, climbed over a nearby wall, and fell to the dirt road more than 30 feet down. Upon locating Mendenhall, officers rushed to perform life-saving attempts on her. The Oakland Fire Department arrived to provide additional support, but she succumbed to her injuries at around 9:13 PM.
Areas affected by the accident were temporarily shut down, resulting in a sig-alert issued at 8:58 PM. Blocked lanes later reopened to the public after approximately 90 minutes. Investigators are still trying to find out what might have caused Mendenhall to climb over the wall.
