Tempe Singer Melody Mason Dies After Crash on Tenth Street

Tempe, AZ (February 6, 2025) – A tragic collision at the intersection of Tenth Street and Maple Avenue in Tempe claimed the life of 35-year-old Melody Mason, a beloved member of the local music community.

Tempe Police reported that the fatal incident occurred when Mason, riding an electric bike, entered the intersection and was struck by a vehicle traveling along Maple Avenue. 

The vehicle, which did not have a stop sign, collided with Mason after she pulled into its path. 

Emergency responders transported her to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, she later passed away from her injuries.

The intersection where the crash occurred lacks key safety features, a concern raised by Mason’s partner, Travis Furnald, and other community members. “Every street corner we went down had a roundabout—except for that one,” Furnald said, expressing frustration over the absence of traffic-calming measures in the area.

Flowers and candles now mark the spot where Mason was hit, serving as a somber reminder of the danger cyclists face. 

A sign posted near the crash site urges city officials to improve safety by installing a roundabout or converting the intersection to a four-way stop.

Tempe residents have reportedly pushed for safety upgrades at this intersection for years. Records indicate there have been four crashes at the site since 2011, highlighting its longstanding issues.

Furnald emphasized that Melody, known for her compassionate and spirited nature, would have wanted her voice to spark change. “She wasn’t silent about anything, and I want her brightness to continue shining,” he said.

The tragedy has reignited calls for the City of Tempe to act swiftly in making the area safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
