8-Year-Old Maverick Martzen Dies, Karmjit Singh Arrested in Selma Car Crash

SELMA, CA (February 23, 2019) – 8-year-old Maverick Martzen was killed Saturday night in a suspected DUI car accident on Rose Avenue.

Officials reported the accident occurred just after 10:00 PM on the intersection of Rose Avenue and Bethel Avenue.

California Highway Patrol stated 35-year-old Karmjit Singh was driving a BMW 750I. Soon after, he ran a stop sign going about 100 mph north on Bethel Avenue. As a result, he slammed into a 2014 Kia Optima on the right side traveling eastbound.

Due to the impact, the Kia was pushed into a tree and the BMW landed upside down in an irrigation ditch.

Upon the arrival of first responders, they revived Maverick and took him to Selma Hospital. He was then airlifted to Valley Children’s Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Maverick was sitting in the right rear passenger seat at the time of the accident.

The occupants in the Kia included Maverick and his parents, 29-year-old Meghan Martzen and 33-year-old Scott Martzen who was the driver. In addition, his parents sustained broken bones and were taken to Selma Hospital. There have been no updates on their medical conditions.

Singh was driving on a suspended license for a DUI conviction in 2016. He was taken to Community Medical Center where he denied to take a breath sample. After being released from the hospital, he was booked into Fresno County Jail. There is currently an immigration hold on him.

Family and friends held a fundraiser on Saturday March 2nd to raise funeral cost funds. A GoFundMe page was made for donations to the family.

We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Maverick Martzen during this difficult time.
