Mateusz Oktaba and Travis Romero Dead After Plowing Into Pole at Bear Valley and Reata Roads

APPLE VALLEY, CA (December 20, 2018) – Two people were killed Wednesday after a driver lost control of the vehicle and slammed into two traffic signal light poles – one of them nearly sheering the car into two – at Bear Valley and Reata roads.

According to authorities, the crash happened around 2 a.m. when a blue BMW 328i, driven by 26-year-old Mateusz Oktaba, was bearing down westbound Bear Valley Road. The BMW struck a north curb, causing the Apple Valley man to lose control and veer sideways. Subsequently, the car struck a traffic signal light pole, taking it down, before it ricocheted into a second traffic light pole and came to a rest on the northwest corner of the intersection.

The crash drew the attention of Sheriff’s deputies from the Apple Valley Station, Apple Valley Fire Protection District personnel and EMTs. Oktaba, as well as his 31-year-old passenger from Apple Valley –Travis Romero — was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities are investigating whether the fatal crash involved any street racing activity. Anyone with additional information is urged to call Deputy Cashion at 760-240-7400.
