13-Year-Old Girl Detained after Escondido Crash Leaves Mateo Salvador and Sofio Sotelo Torres Dead

ESCONDIDO, CA (February 14, 2021) – Saturday afternoon, Mateo Salvador and Sofio Sotelo Torres died in an accident on Mission Avenue and Ash Street.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. on Mission Avenue and Ash Street.

A 13-year-old girl took her mother’s car and tried to flee an officer. The officer had stopped the vehicle near Mission Avenue and Gamble Street for a traffic violation.

“What the officer didn’t know at the time is that the girl’s juvenile friend was a passenger in the car.”

The girl’s escaped as the officer followed and drove east on Mission Avenue. Then, they turned left onto Ash Street.

“They apparently lost control and their car slid into the planter on the east side of the road near a transfer facility,” Escondido police Lt. Kevin Toth added.

After detaining the girls, the officers found out that the vehicle struck two men sleeping in the bushes. One of them died at the scene. Meanwhile, the other succumbed to injuries at a hospital.

Then, a DUI driver struck an officer’s car while it blocked the roadway.

“The police car had all of the emergency lights activated and was unoccupied,” Toth added. “No one was injured and the driver was arrested for DUI.”

Escondido Police Department identified the two men fatally struck as 33-year-old Mateo Salvador and 51-year-old Sofio Sotelo Torres.
