Maximiliano Chavez Jr Arrested in Golden Valley Auto Accident near Shinarump Drive and Apache Road
GOLDEN VALLEY, AZ (May 5, 2025) – Friday morning, a horrific 2-vehicle crash near Shinarump Drive killed Marian Merk.
The incident involving two vehicles occurred near Shinarump Drive and Apache Road.
When fire crews arrived, they located a woman trapped inside one of the vehicles. Merk, 61, was extricated but later died from her injuries.
Initial details indicated that a Chevrolet pickup truck heading east on Shinarump Drive crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Hyundai SUV. Deputies stated the truck appeared to be speeding. The occupants of the pickup fled the scene before authorities arrived.
Deputies began a search and found the passenger, 30-year-old Brandon James Tosh of Kingman, hiding under a bush in a remote area north of the crash. He was taken into custody and booked into the Mohave County Adult Detention Facility on multiple active warrants.
Detectives later discovered Tosh had provided false information, leading to additional felony charges for hindering prosecution.
A felony warrant was issued for the driver, identified as 29-year-old Chavez Jr. of Kingman.
On Saturday, deputies received a report from a resident who said a man approached him asking for water and admitted to fleeing a crash. Deputies responded and identified the man as Chavez. He admitted to being the driver, stated he had been drinking all night, and was driving over 70 mph before the crash.
Chavez was booked on second-degree murder charges.
