Margaret Bodenschatz Crashes Into Patrol Vehicle in 5 Freeway Wrong-Way Accident Near Sunset Hills Drive

COTTONWOOD, CA (January 14, 2020) — Authorities are investigating Friday’s wrong-way collision that occurred on the 5 Freeway near Sunset Hills Drive.

According to a California Highway Patrol press release, authorities responded to several calls around 4:00 a.m. Callers reported a northbound vehicle traveling in the southbound 5 Freeway lanes near Sunset Hills Drive.

Soon after, an officer attempted to stop the wrong-way 2011 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Anderson resident Margaret Bodenschatz, whom officials later identified.

The 75-year-old woman continued past the first officer before a second officer intervened. To prevent other travelers from colliding with her, the officer ran a traffic break. He reportedly stopped in the left-most lane with his emergency lights activated as the Chevrolet Impala approached his vehicle. However, the Chevy collided with his car, causing him injuries.

Inferring from investigations, officers also learned that Bodenschatz suffered a medical condition as she drove in the wrong direction. Reports say she did not appear to be injured, but paramedics brought her to a hospital as a precaution.

The 46-year-old officer, a 19 year long member of the department, sought further treatment at a Red Bluff Hospital.

With so many drivers on the road, anything can happen. We never know when others could be experiencing a medical emergency; therefore, if you notice any peculiarities on the highway, take heed and pull over, if necessary, to alert officers. In addition, steer clear from those driving irresponsibly. That person may either be impaired, falling asleep, distracted or experiencing a medical emergency.
