Marcelino De Jesus-Santiago Dead, Phillip Romero and Sergio Cruz Injured in Gilroy Car Accident
GILROY, CA (September 20, 2019) – A 27-year-old Merced County succumbed to death after a head-on crash on Highway 152.
The incident closed Highway 152 on September 18. Marcelino De Jesus-Santiago of Delhi, died after a wrong-way SUV crashed into his 2014 Toyota Tacoma. Authorities pronounced De Jesus-Santiago dead at the scene.
The CHP received reports of the crash before 8:00 a.m. on Highway 152, east of Bloomfield Avenue and west of Lovers Lane.
Marcelino De Jesus-Santiago and his passenger, 27-year-old Sergio Cruz traveled east on the highway at around 55 mph when 31-year-old Phillip Romero driving a westbound 2000 Ford Explorer crossed solid double yellow dividing lines and collided into him at around 60 mph.
It’s still unclear why Romero drove into the oncoming traffic.
Responders transported Cruz to San Jose Regional Hospital with major injuries. In addition, Romero also suffered major injuries a CalStar helicopter flew him to the same hospital.
Authorities are still investigating the crash and are still looking at the possibility of alcohol or drugs as a factor in the crash. In addition, they are urging anyone with information to call CHP officers at 408-848-2324 or email at ktritenbach@chp.ca.gov.
