Manuel Mesa Arrested, Bicyclist Dead after Visalia Hit-and-Run Crash on Court Street
VISALIA, CA (September 13, 2019) – Officers arrested a driver identified as Manuel Mesa after a hit-and-run crash on Wednesday, September 11.
According to the police, a 61-year-old female bicyclist traveled east on Modoc Ditch Bike Trail. Then a vehicle struck her when she failed to stop for traffic on Court Street.
The driver, 40-year-old Manuel Mesa, stopped for a moment. However, he did not provide help to the woman, officials said. He then fled the area and ran over the victim, dragging her 200 yards.
Paramedics rushed the woman to the hospital where she died from her injuries. Her identity was not immediately released.
Officials said that witnesses identified Mesa. They later found him to be under the influence of alcohol.
Officers arrested Mesa for DUI causing bodily injury or death, hit-and-run, and homicide.
