Sacramento Considers State of Emergency Amid Rising Pedestrian and Cyclist Fatalities
Sacramento, CA (September 18, 2024) On Monday, a 44-year-old man was kills by a passing motorist struck in a tragic hit-and-run crash on Capital City Freeway.
Authorities say that this fatal hit-and-run marks the latest in a surge of pedestrian and bicyclist deaths in the region, pushing city leaders to consider declaring a local state of emergency to address the growing public safety crisis.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the man was hit while standing near the eastbound Capital City Freeway onramp at Watt Avenue, close to Auburn Boulevard.
Officals say that the driver, heading south on Watt Avenue, hit the pedestrian and fled without stopping. Authorities are still searching for the driver, who may have been operating a 2012-2015 Toyota Camry.
This incident adds to the mounting toll on Sacramento roadways, with 21 fatalities reported this year, including 14 pedestrians or cyclists. Last week, a 48-year-old woman, who was critically injured while crossing Sutterville Road, died in the hospital.
Sacramento Councilmembers are expected to propose a state of emergency at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Maple urged city leaders to take “immediate and urgent action” after another pedestrian tragedy.
The proposal includes directing funds toward a public education campaign to improve traffic safety and pedestrian awareness, as well as increasing traffic enforcement on high-risk roadways like Sutterville Road. Sacramento will also reaffirm its commitment to the Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2027.
