35-Year-Old Carpinteria Man Fatally Injured in Accident Involving Stolen Vehicle
LOMPOC, CA (April 20, 2018) – On Friday morning, a two-vehicle collision on Highway 1 between Lompoc and Gaviota, claimed the life of a 35-year-old Carpinteria man.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened around 6 AM. The Carpinteria man, who was reportedly driving a stolen 1999 Honda Civic from Santa Barbara, was heading northbound on Highway 1.
It is still unknown how fast the vehicle was traveling when it struck a 2004 Ford Taurus head-on after swerving left into the southbound lanes.
The impact of the collision left the Civic driver with life-threatening injuries, to which he succumbed to later on. While the three occupants of Taurus had to be extricated from their car after it overturned in a concrete cattle undercrossing and landed on its roof. All three, whose ages range from 33 to 65, sustained moderate to major injuries. The 33-year-old driver and a 35-year-old passenger were airlifted by CALSTAR to the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The thrid passenger, a 65-year-old man, was rushed to the Lompoc Valley Medical Center.
Highway 1 was shut down for almost four hours as officials cleaned the scene and investigators gathered evidence. It is suspected that drugs or alcohol may have been contributing factors in the fatal collision. The identity of the deceased victim has not yet been released, pending notification of his family.
No other information has been disclosed at this time.
