FRESNO, CA (July 18, 2018) – A young boy was killed Wednesday afternoon and his mother was seriously injured, following a collision between an SUV and a big rig.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly crash took place at about 3:45 PM on Highway 43 near Davis Avenue. A black Chevy Tahoe SUV was heading southbound on the highway when a semi-truck swerved into its path.

The driver of the SUV, Ewa Beach resident Bryson Rivera, attempted to avoid the oncoming vehicle and went left. However, the semi-truck pulled back in its lane and collided with the SUV.

2-year-old Liam Rivera, who was seated on the passenger side in the back seat, sustained critical injuries. Paramedics arrived at the scene and attempted to resuscitate the toddler. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kristy Murata-Rivera, Liam’s mother, suffered severe injuries and was transported to a hospital in Fresno. She is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) but is expected to survive. Bryson and their 4-year-old son, Kaleb Rivera, were not injured in the collision.
