Laura Pino Killed, Officer Hospitalized in Highway 101 Collision Near Spencer Avenue

SAUSALITO, CA (November 26, 2018) – A 72-year-old woman was killed, and a California Highway Patrol officer was injured after a vehicle spun out of control and struck another on Highway 101 near Spencer Avenue Saturday.

According to Officer Andrew Barclay, a spokesman for the CHP, officers were traveling southbound on Highway 101 around 8 a.m. and saw that a vehicle had spun out and was blocking the slow lane of traffic. Officers subsequently pulled up behind the disabled car with their lights turned on and set flares to shut down the lanes.

However, as they were inspecting the incident, an oncoming Toyota Corolla driven by 72-year-old Laura Lee Pino, of Tiburon, was spinning out and heading toward them. One of the officers, who was standing near the patrol vehicle, saw the Toyota vehicle coming toward him and dove into the rear seat of the patrol car. The Toyota slammed into the car, causing moderate injuries to the unidentified CHP officer who was later transported to Marin General Hospital.

Pino suffered serious injuries and was brought to a nearby hospital where she died. The other CHP officer was unharmed, as well as the man who was involved in the disabled car.

It is not clear what caused the crashes, but authorities are investigating this case further.

Our sincere sympathies and condolences go out to the bereaved family and friends of Laura Lee Pino.
