Morning Bus Accident on Sandwood Street in Lakewood Hurts Students

LAKEWOOD, CA (January 8, 2019) – Children were injured following a bus accident Tuesday morning in Lakewood, CHP officials said.

The accident happened around 8:43 a.m. at 3319 Sandwood Street near Riley Elementary School.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a vehicle stopped in front of a Mission School Transportation bus, causing the bus driver to slam on her brakes. The students inside the bus were reportedly hurt from the impact, but the extent and number of patients were not immediately known.

Los Angeles County Fire Department was called to the scene to set up a traffic break and give aid to the injured students.

Details surrounding the collision were not made clear in the reports and media releases. Further investigation is underway.

When driving near a bus, keep in mind that they make frequent, sometimes sudden stops. Do not follow too closely. Be extra careful, watch out for buses, and respect their size and presence on the road. If we all give buses a second glance when driving in traffic, we can help reduce the rate of bus crashes in California.
