Jose Vasquez-Lopez Arrested after Accident on Van Dyk Road
WHATCOM, WA (April 29, 2018) – On Sunday afternoon, three women were injured as a result of a two-vehicle DUI collision on Hannegan Road.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision happened at the intersection of Hannegan and Van Dyk Roads, around 4:50 PM. A white 2011 Dodge Nitro, driven by 62-year-old Kerry Lynn Whitworth, was heading northbound on Hannegan Road, just south of Lynden.
At the same time, a blue 1997 Ford F250, driven by 47-year-old Jose Vasquez-Lopez, was traveling west on Van Dyk. Vasquez-Lopez ran a red light at the intersection and struck Whitworth’s vehicle on the passenger side. The impact of the collision sent the Dodge spinning around into the southbound lanes.
The three people inside of the Nitro, including Whitworth, were all residents of Lynden. Whitworth, 60-year-old Joyce C Whitworth, and 21-year-old Savannah Chitwood were transported to St Joseph Hospital in Bellingham. A hospital staff confirmed that all three were successfully treated and released on Monday.
Vasquez-Lopez was reportedly uninjured and was booked into Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of vehicular assault. Investigators added that they believe he had been drinking before the crash occurred.
