34-Year-Old Belfair Woman Fatally Injured when Helping Stranded Motorist near Peppermill Place SE

KITSAP COUNTY, WA (March 22, 2018) – A Belfair woman was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on Sedgwick Road, about a mile southeast of Port Orchard, early Thursday morning.

According to the initial investigation, 34-year-old Katherine Phillips was driving home from the night shift at the Southworth ferry terminal around 5 AM, when she stopped to helped a disabled vehicle on the side of the road.

Katy Meeker, 34, of Sequim had run out of gas and was parked partially on the road near Peppermill Place SE in South Kitsap. She had run out of fuel and was stranded. Phillips drove to a nearby gas station and returned with a can of gas. While filling Meeker’s car, she was hit.

The vehicle didn’t stop and continued traveling west on Sedgwick.

Troopers and emergency personnel arrived to the area of the crash. Phillips was pronounced dead on scene from the impact of the collision. Meeker was uninjured but remained at the scene.

Sedgwick was blocked off by officials for investigation. The suspect vehicle is believed to be a gold or tan sedan, with headlight damage and possible front-end damage on its passenger side. It was described to be similar to a Toyota Camry, and believed to have aftermarket headlights that look brighter than the original stock ones.

The driver will probably face felony hit-and-run charges. Trooper Russ Winger advised that the quicker they turn themselves in, the better it will be for them.

If you have seen a similar vehicle, or know any additional information on this fatal accident, contact the Washington State Patrol at (360) 473-0300.

Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Katherine Phillips. She was a loved community member and Washington State Ferries employee, and considered to be a caring and kind-hearted woman. May she rest in peace.
