3 Dead in Montague County Auto Accident on US Highway 81
MONTAGUE COUNTY, TX (June 14, 2023) – Saturday morning, Katelyn Beth Smoot and 2 others died in a brutal fiery crash on US Highway 81.
The incident happened at about 5:10 a.m. on US Highway 81, about 2 miles north of Ringgold in Montague County.
Justice of the Peace Stefanie Horton confirmed that 32-year-old Smoot, 78-year-old James Edward Echols, and 78-year-old Billy Ray Herron, all of Teral, Oklahoma, died at the scene.
According to reports, Smoot drove a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup north on U.S. 81. Meanwhile, a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Echols and with Herron in the passenger’s seat were driving south on U.S. 81.
As the Silverado drove across the center stripe into the southbound lane, it crashed with the F-150. Then, the F-150 had caught fire as a result of the collision.
Meanwhile, officers confirmed that the Silverado wore a seatbelt. Meanwhile, they haven’t determined whether the two occupants of the F-150 had their seatbelts equipped.
At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.
Due to the limited information available, the authorities continued to investigate the crash.
We want to send our sincere sympathies to the bereaved family and friends of the victims.
