3 Family Members Killed after Cliff Collapses at Grandview Surf Beach

ENCINITAS, CA (August 2, 2019) – Three family members died after a bluff collapse Friday afternoon.

Two of the victims were mother and daughter, identified as 65-year-old Julie Davis and 35-year-old Anne Clave, both from Encinitas, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. Police identified the third victim who instantly died at the scene as Elizabeth Cox, Clave’s aunt.

Clave died at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, while Davis was declared dead at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas.

The bluff collapse happened just before 3:00 p.m. near the 1700 block of Neptune Avenue north of Grandview Surf Beach, a popular surf spot. The victims were part of a family gathering celebrating Cox surviving breast cancer.

According to reports, a 30-foot-long slab of the cliff plunged onto the sand. A helicopter captured footage of beach chairs, towels, surfboards and beach toys strewn about the sand.

Lifeguards and beachgoers helped search for victims. Paramedics found two others injured. As a result, authorities treated one victim at the scene and transported another to a hospital.

Officials advised beachgoers to keep out the active area.

No words can mend the broken hearts and sorrow felt during this delicate moment. Our deepest sympathies are with the families and friends of the victims.
