Disabled Veteran Injured in Pedestrian Accident near 129th Street

GARDENA, CA (August 27, 2018) – On Monday morning, a disabled veteran sustained injuries after struck by a hit-and-run driver on Cimarron Avenue.

The incident occurred at around 6:30 AM at the 13000 block of Cimarron Avenue, near 129th Street. Joshua Byrd, who served two tours in Iraq with the U.S. Army, was walking his service dog outside the business complex where he works when he saw the driver throwing garbage from his window.

Byrd asked the driver to pick it up but he didn’t answer, so he picked it up himself and put it on the hood of the man’s vehicle.

The driver stayed in the area, and after a couple minutes removed the garbage from his car and threw it back into the street. That was when he started using profane language and driving in circles in front of Byrd. The suspect also stepped out of the car and threw bottles at Byrd. It was that point that Byrd stood on the road to take a picture of the man’s vehicle when he was hit. According to Byrd, the driver made another U-turn and drove it straight toward him at around 35-40 mph.

Byrd suffered a fractured wrist, a sprained ankle, whiplash, road rash, bruising, and needed stitches on his face. His dog was not injured in the collision.

A surveillance video captured the suspect hitting Byrd, and authorities are still trying to locate him. According to Gardena Police, the crash is still under investigation as an assault with a deadly weapon. They have not yet released a description of the driver, but Byrd described the suspect as a heavyset black man around 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall. Anyone with more information about the suspect or the incident is urged to call officials at (310) 217-960.
