88-Year-Old Man Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash at Santa Rosa Avenue
SANTA ROSA, CA (June 2, 2018) – An elderly man was fatally injured early Saturday morning after a DUI collision on Court Road. He was identified as 88-year-old Jose Sanchez Lozano of Santa Rosa.
Police responded to the scene of the accident around 6:23 AM after receiving reports of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian. According to witnesses, a white Chevrolet pickup truck struck Lozano in a crosswalk at the intersection of Court Road and Santa Rosa Avenue, before speeding southbound on Santa Rosa.
Lozano was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. He was found about 250 feet south of the crosswalk at the intersection, but police said video footage showed him walking on the crosswalk as the vehicle struck him.
According to officials, the suspect lost control of the vehicle, crossed northbound lanes of traffic, jumped a curb and struck a street sign at 2970 Santa Rosa Avenue. The man then fled the scene on foot, leaving the vehicle at the scene. Police searched for the suspect and found him at the Quail Run Apartment Complex at 1018 Bellevue Avenue. He was identified as 20-year-old Eduardo Jaurez Espinosa of Santa Rosa.
The investigation revealed that Espinosa was under the influence of alcohol when he fatally struck the pedestrian. He was arrested for vehicular manslaughter with DUI, felony hit-and-run, and DUI causing great bodily injury or death with a blood alcohol content (BAC) over 0.08 percent. He was booked into the Sonoma County Jail with a bail set at $350,000.
