Two Fatal Road Accidents on 25 Freeway only Two Hours Apart

PUEBLO, CO (May 1, 2018) – Two people died in separate road accidents on 25 Freeway on Tuesday.

The first crash occurred a little after 10:30 AM when 21-year-old Jose Luna Duran of Valvillo, Mexico jumped from the back of a Jeep Wrangler heading northbound. He was immediately struck by a semi-truck that was traveling just behind him. It was not immediately clear why Duran leaped from the vehicle.

Duran was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash but the driver of the semi-truck was not injured. Alcohol and drug use are not considered to be involved in the incident but it is still under investigation by authorities.

This initial crash caused a backup of traffic and another fatal crash a little more than two hours later, several miles south of the scene of the first accident. Warning signs were posted advising drivers to slow down for the accident ahead, but a semi truck plowed failed to slow down and plowed into the slow-moving traffic, hitting multiple cars and another semi.

61-year-old Steven Aikman, a passenger in one of those cars, was killed while several other drivers were taken to area hospitals. CSP did not identify the driver of the semi-truck that hit the other vehicles but he is likely to face charges. Authorities did not immediately announce more details.

This second incident forced authorities to close down both directions of the freeway. The northbound lanes were closed until about 6:00 PM.
