John Menezes Jr. Dead, Nine Hospitalized after Los Banos Chemical Spill
LOS BANOS, CA (June 18, 2019) – A man identified as John Menezes Jr. died in a chemical spill incident on Monroe Avenue on Thursday, June 13.
Merced County Sheriff’s Deputies and Cal Fire crews responded to the incident. In addition, they arrived to the area of Monroe Avenue and China Camp Road at about 1:00 p.m.
The reported chemical spill also sent nine other people to local hospitals in Merced County. However, some of those who received treatments were responding deputies and medical personnel.
According to Merced County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Daryl Allen, they identified the deceased as 49-year-old John Menezes Jr., of Los Banos.
In addition, Allen stated that paramedics transported a male juvenile to Valley Children’s Hospital. However, they listed him in stable condition.
No other information about the cause of death or the spill was available. Deputies said that the chemical involved is agriculture related.
Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation with Cal Fire and Merced County Environmental Health Services. They are determining what chemical or chemicals were involved in the spill.
